Designing the Perfect cosy Nook for Your Stitching Sanctuary
Let's be honest — life can be a lot. Between school drop-offs, work (whether it's in or out of the house), appointments, and the general whirlwind of everyday life, carving out a tiny corner just for yourself can feel like a luxury. But let me tell you — having a cosy nook that's just for stitching? It's more than a luxury. It's a lifeline.
Whether I've got five minutes or a full afternoon (a rare unicorn, I know), my little stitching spot helps me switch gears and recharge. So today I want to walk you through how to create your own cosy stitching sanctuary — somewhere practical, comforting, and most importantly, yours.

Choosing the Perfect Spot
Start by scoping out a space that feels peaceful. It doesn't have to be big — just a quiet-ish corner where you won't be constantly interrupted (🤞). I find a spot near a window is ideal (hooray for natural light!), but if that's not possible, don't stress. I'm a big fan of OttLite lamps: they're brilliant for evening stitching and give you that crisp daylight-style brightness without the glare. An absolute game-changer.
When picking your nook, think about:
- Lighting: Natural light is fab, but good artificial lighting is key; especially for fiddly details.
- Noise levels: Avoid high-traffic areas (though sometimes the living room is all we've got!).
- Size: Small is fine! It's about what works for you, not some Pinterest-perfect craft room.

Furnishing Your Nook
Once you've claimed your corner (congrats!), it's time to make it comfy. I'd recommend:
- A chair that supports your back (no hunching!).
- A small table, cute container or helpful trolley for your threads, scissors, and snacks (because, well, obviously).
- A footstool or blanket for extra cosiness 🧡
Then -this is the fun bit- add those personal touches. Maybe a framed piece you've stitched, or a photo that brings you joy. I've got heaps of my finishes behind my desk which you will have seen on my FlossTube videos. They're a lovely reminder of how far I've come in my stitching journey.

Accessibility & Adaptability
As someone who has ADHD and juggles family life, I know firsthand that our stitching spaces need to work with us, not against us. So here are a few things to consider that might make your nook even more inclusive and supportive:
- Ergonomics: Think about how you sit and stitch. A supportive chair and an adjustable hoop stand or floor frame can reduce strain on your back, neck, and hands.
- Neurodivergent-friendly options: If you're like me and your brain thrives on low stimulation, try soft lighting, noise-canceling headphones, or even a weighted lap blanket. On the flip side, maybe a colourful, energising space helps keep you focused — lean into whatever supports your brain.
- Mobility-friendly layouts: Keep essentials within arm's reach. Baskets, rolling carts, or wall-mounted organisers can all help reduce unnecessary movement.
- Sensory elements: Fidget tools, textured fabrics, or even scented candles (if you're not sensitive to them) can bring comfort and calm.

My old couch setup, at a previous home we lived at. Storage Solutions
You'd be amazed what you can fit into a small space when you're clever with storage. A few of my go-tos:
- Vertical storage: Wall shelves are a dream for freeing up floor space.
- Cute containers: Baskets, tins, or repurposed jars keep everything tidy and nice to look at.
- Pinboards: Perfect for keeping patterns visible and stopping them from slipping behind the couch (we've all been there).

Creating a Mood
Now that the bones of your nook are in place, let's make it yours. Add:
- Cushions or a cosy throw blanket
- A plant or succulent to bring in some life
- Music or ambient sounds (I love my noise-cancelling headphones!)
- Maybe a scented candle, if that's your vibe
I find a little ritual helps me settle in — lighting my OttLite, choosing which work-in-progress to work on, popping on some instrumental music… it's like flipping a switch in my brain from "busy" to "calm and creative."

Final Thoughts
Designing a cosy nook doesn't have to be expensive or Instagram-worthy. It just needs to work for you. Whether it's a whole room or a little chair by the window, this space becomes a soft landing at the end of a long day. Somewhere to unwind, to create, to stitch your stories into fabric.
