That time I cross-stitched a house
Once upon a time, back before I fractured my big toe, I was contacted and asked to design and stitch a large, 8"x10" cross-stitch house piece based on an existing home. I was definitely nervous about completing something so large with such a bigger budget than I was used to, but I felt confident that I could eventually create something beautiful that my customer would love.
And I definitely think I did just that.
More details on the piece itself
Backstory
My customer told me that the piece would eventually be a gift for his grandmother, and would need to compliment a piece she stitched previously of a different house. This was why the piece needed to be done as a cross-stitch and not what I originally suggested; hand embroidered. Which would've made the process quicker and cheaper. But he was certain about choosing a cross-stitched piece over that and both at the time and in hindsight, I think he made the right call.
Knowing that I would be making something that needed to compare to a piece made by his grandmother was a bit daunting, but I reassured myself I could do it! I knew my ability to make a custom pattern based off a photograph was good enough and that my stitching always looked lovely in the end.

Let's have a look at some sweet, sweet crosses close-up, shall we?
Fun Facts
- The pattern consists of 32 different DMC colours, almost 7,500 cross-stitches, a bunch of backstitching and measured 9" x 6.9".
- I finished stitching this while I was streaming so I caught the very last stitches that were put in place! Check out the Instagram Reel I saved of this momentous occasion!
- I started stitching this in June 2021 and completed it in October 2021.
In closing
As I mentioned earlier; I really enjoyed my time working on this piece. I was truly sad to wrap it up. Happy to see it completed, don't get me wrong, but it left a big open space in my WIP pile that was hard to fill.
If you or someone you know might like a similar piece created for them, I encourage you to request a quote today and we can chat about your vision.
A little aside: For most of the stitching progression, I took videos of how it looked after each colour. You can check that out via Instagram if you're curious of how that looked.
