The Serenity Poem, Reimagined in Stitches

A Custom Creation: The Serenity Poem in Stitch & Florals

There’s something truly special about bringing a meaningful quote to life with needle and thread. Back in February 2021 (whoa; that was a while ago..!), I had the pleasure of creating a commissioned backstitch and hand-embroidered piece featuring the 'Serenity Poem'—but with a slight twist.

A work-in-progress picture of a needlepoint commission. It has a poem backstitched with bobbinated coloured flosses, ready to add hand-embroidered flowers to it.

A Thoughtful Custom Request

When my customer first reached out, she wasn’t sure if I could bring her idea to life. She wanted the Serenity Poem stitched up, but in a way that aligned with her beliefs. Instead of using the traditional wording, she requested that "God" be replaced with "Universe"—a small yet significant change that made the piece more personal to her.

After chatting about her vision, she was thrilled to learn I could absolutely make it happen! Even better, she gave me complete creative freedom over the design.

Designing & Stitching the Piece

With full reign over the layout, I chose to stitch the poem using two fonts from my own collection—‘Alison’ and ‘Nancy’—in simple yet effective backstitching. This gave the lettering a clean, readable look that complemented the surrounding embellishments.

To add a delicate, decorative touch, I incorporated hand-embroidered florals on both sides of the poem. The mix of soft white daisies, deep pink roses, and leafy greenery brought warmth and vibrance to the piece, balancing the structured lettering beautifully.

Because of its design, this piece stitched up quite quickly—one of the benefits of combining cross-stitch with freestyle embroidery! If you’ve been thinking about commissioning a similar piece, I can take on projects like this with a fairly quick turnaround.

A Happy Customer & A Future Possibility for You

When I sent photos of the finished piece to my customer, she was over the moon! She loved how it turned out, and knowing that my stitching had created something so meaningful for her made this project extra special.
