Overview

Pistil stitch consists of a straight stitch ending in a French knot (hence it’s alternate name of long-armed French knot).

This decorative stitch can be used to create flower pistils or similar objects. As a variation of the French Knot, the Pistil Stitch is to the French Knot what the Long-Tailed Daisy is to the Lazy Daisy—the primary difference being the longer tail.

Method

It's helpful to be familiar with the French Knot before attempting this stitch.

Alternatively, with this stitch, you can do a single Straight Stitch and a French Knot at the end of it, if you desire.

Step 1
Bring the needle up through the fabric from the back.
Step 2
Hold the needle near to where the thread emerges, then take the thread around the needle once or twice.
Step 3
Place the needle part way into the fabric, a short distance from where the thread emerges.
Step 4
Holding the needle in place, draw the spiral down to the fabric surface.
Step 5
Keeping the thread taut, draw the needle and thread through the fabric to complete the pistil.

History

The origins of the stitch are obscure but predate the Arts and Crafts era as it is listed as one of the range of historic stitches used by the embroiderers at Morris and Co (William Morris’s company).
