Introducing the “Losing Side” Cross-Stitch Pattern
Sometimes, the best way to process difficult emotions is through creativity. My latest cross-stitch pattern, "Losing Side," was born out of a mix of frustration, worry, and determination following the 2024 U.S. election results. It’s a playful yet poignant design inspired by my favourite TV show Firefly and aimed at those who feel unseen and unappreciated in the wake of this election.
As someone who can’t vote in the country I call home, this pattern is my way of having a voice. Like many of you, I’m grappling with the return of a president whose first term I viewed as disastrous. Watching him secure a second term over a highly qualified female candidate feels deeply personal and disheartening. It leaves me worried about the future — as a woman, as a mother to two daughters —one with exceptional needs— and as someone living in the U.S. with a green card. I’m also deeply concerned for the many people less fortunate than I am, especially people of colour, who often bear the brunt of harmful policies.
But out of these heavy feelings came a spark of resilience. "Losing Side" is a beginner-friendly pattern featuring full cross-stitches, backstitching, and a few French knots. It uses 11 DMC floss colours and can be finished in a frame or embroidery hoop. Whether you’re a liberal, a Firefly fan, or someone who just needs a creative outlet to process recent events, this pattern is for you. The PDF includes detailed instructions, a list of required and suggested materials, and tips to help you along the way. It’s designed to be accessible to relative beginners, making it a great choice even if you’re new to cross-stitching.
Why This Pattern Matters
For me, stitching is more than just a hobby — it’s a way to channel my emotions, ground myself, and make something meaningful with my hands. "Losing Side" is an invitation to do the same. It’s a reminder that even when the world feels overwhelming, we can still create, express, and connect with others who share our values.
But this pattern is also a call to action. If you feel as strongly as I do about supporting those who may be most affected by this administration, consider donating to organisations working to make a difference. Mental health services, in particular, are often underfunded and undervalued, and they’re likely to face even greater challenges in the coming years.
Here are a few organisations to consider supporting:
- National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI): Providing advocacy, education, and support for individuals and families affected by mental health conditions.
- The Trevor Project: Focused on crisis intervention and suicide prevention for LGBTQ+ youth.
- Mental Health America (MHA): Promoting mental health as a critical part of overall wellness through education and advocacy.
Stitch Your Feelings; Support a Cause
If "Losing Side" resonates with you, I encourage you to grab the pattern and start stitching.
Use it as a way to process your feelings, spark conversations, and create something that represents your values. And if you’re able, please consider donating to one of the organisations listed above or another cause close to your heart. Together, we can stitch through the hard times and make a difference.
