Why Quick Stitch Sessions Are My Daily Mental Reset
Let’s be honest—life can get a bit much sometimes. Between the school runs, the work deadlines, the appointments you forgot about until 10 minutes ago… it's no wonder finding even five minutes for yourself feels impossible.
But that’s exactly why I want to talk about something small that can make a big difference: daily cross-stitching.
Now, I know what you're thinking: “I barely have time to drink my coffee while it's still warm, let alone sit down to stitch.” But hear me out! You don’t need a whole hour, a fancy workspace, or absolute silence. All you need is a few minutes—and a needle and thread.
The Science Bit (But Stick With Me!)
Research shows that crafting—yes, that includes cross-stitching—can seriously benefit your mental health. We’re talking lowered stress levels, improved mood, and even reduced anxiety. Stitching gives your brain a little holiday. The repetitive motion, the focus, the tiny, satisfying clicks of the needle going through fabric… it's like a gentle meditation that doesn’t involve trying to empty your mind (because let’s face it, who can do that?).
And if you’re a fellow ADHDer like me, you’ll know how hard it can be to switch off. Stitching gives me a calming, productive focus that quiets the mental noise—and I know I’m not alone in that.

Short and Sweet Sessions = Big Wins
You don't need to tackle a whole project in one sitting. In fact, short sessions are kind of where the magic happens. Here's why they work so well:
-
They're do-able. Even if you’ve only got 5 or 10 minutes between tasks, that’s enough time to make a bit of progress.
-
They build habits. A few minutes a day adds up so quickly. You’re building a routine without it feeling like a chore.
-
They give you that “I did something!” feeling. That little win (even just one motif or flower stitched) can give you such a boost—especially on the hard days.
-
They play nice with multitasking. You can absolutely stitch while listening to an audiobook, a podcast, or even while “watching” that comfort TV show you’ve seen a dozen times (hi, Firefly fans 👋). It's like doing two feel-good things at once—with bonus productivity points.
And hey, if you need an excuse to sneak off for a quick break with your stitching, just tell everyone it's your “mental health therapy.” (Because it totally is.)

Celebrating the Little Victories
Every stitch you make is a teeny-tiny celebration. You’re creating something beautiful one moment at a time. And if you’re anything like me, seeing a project slowly grow each day feels like a lovely reminder that you're making progress—even when life feels a bit chaotic.
It’s not about how fast you finish, but how lovely it feels while you’re doing it.
Where Can You Fit in Stitching?
If you’re wondering when on earth you’re supposed to squeeze in stitching time, here are a few gentle suggestions that work for me:
-
In the morning – A few calming stitches with your cuppa while the house is still quiet(ish)? Bliss.
-
During lunch – Ten quiet minutes while your soup heats up and the kids are busy/distracted/squabbling elsewhere.
-
At night – This is my favourite: curling up with my stitching and my favourite “watch-but-don’t-watch” TV show. You know the ones—shows you’ve seen so many times you’re really just listening while stitching and only glancing up for the good bits. (Doctor Who; I’m looking at you.)
It’s the art of doing two comforting things at once. Stitching and ideal sounds? Chef’s kiss 😘👌

The Two Little Kits Way
This is exactly why I created Two Little Kits—so that anyone (especially other tired, neurodivergent, creative souls) could enjoy the joy of stitching without the pressure. Whether you’re working on one of my downloadable patterns or using one of my physical kits (more on those coming soon!), every design is made with encouragement, self-expression, and mental wellness in mind.
If you're new to stitching or need a refresher, don't forget I’ve got a bunch of helpful embroidery stitch tutorials here. And if you're ready to find a new project to stitch in those tiny windows of time, check out my cross-stitch and embroidery pattern collections. There’s something for everyone—from cheeky quotes to calming florals.
Wrapping Up (With a Threaded Needle, Obviously)
Whether you’ve been stitching for years or have only just picked up a hoop, I promise—those small daily sessions really do add up. Not just in terms of progress, but in how you feel.
And don’t forget—you’re always welcome in the Two Little Kits Facebook group! It’s a lovely place to share your works-in-progress, get encouragement, and cheer each other on. Sharing your stitching journey creates a beautiful little dopamine loop that keeps the motivation flowing (and the needle moving!).
So next time you’re overwhelmed or just need a little moment to yourself, grab your stitching. One stitch, one breath, one tiny win at a time—you’ve got this.
